ITIN processing time: how long the IRS takes
ITIN processing time is the wait after the IRS receives your Form W-7 package. Allow 7 weeks for a written notice, or 9 to 11 weeks from January 15 through April 30 or if you applied from abroad. There is no online tracker for the application.

How long an ITIN takes
The clock starts when the IRS receives a complete package, not when you drop it in a mailbox overseas. The assignment date is generally that receipt date, if the IRS did not need anything else to finish the application. For a renewal, the assignment date stays the original date.
| Situation | Written notice | What else to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Most of the year, from the US | 7 weeks | The IRS writes with the result. Keep the CP565 if it assigns the number |
| January 15 through April 30 | 9 to 11 weeks | Peak season. The same window applies to a renewal |
| You applied from abroad | 9 to 11 weeks | Mail both ways sits inside that longer window |
| You mailed original documents | The notice follows the weeks above | Originals should be back within 60 days. Call if they are not |
How to assemble the package is in how to get an ITIN. A renewal uses the same clock, and the steps are in ITIN renewal.
What changes the wait
- A complete Form W-7, the tax return or the exception proof, and current identity documents
- A passport, or two other acceptable documents, originals or copies certified by the issuing agency
- An application the IRS can finish without writing back for more paper
- Peak season, January 15 through April 30
- Applying from abroad
- Expired, missing, or unreadable documents, or a package sent to the tax-return address instead of the W-7 address
- An ITIN that has expired, if you need credits that require it to be renewed first
You must have an ITIN assigned to you, a spouse on a joint return, and a dependent by the return due date, including extensions, to claim certain credits. That assignment date is why a late package can cost a credit even after the number finally arrives.
How to check ITIN status
There is no "Where's My ITIN" tool. You wait for the letter, then you call.
- Wait 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks if you applied from January 15 through April 30 or from abroad, before you treat the application as late.
- Call 800-829-1040 in the US, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. From abroad, call 267-941-1000. That number is not toll-free.
- Use the same numbers if mailed originals have not come back within 60 days.
- Check the IRS processing-status page to see which month of Form W-7 receipts they are on. It is not a lookup for your name.
- If you move before the notice arrives, contact the IRS so the letter can find you.
- Don't file a second Form W-7 while the first one is still inside the window.

Notice assigned
A CP565 means the IRS assigned the ITIN. Keep the letter. The IRS writes the number on the return that was in the package and sends that return on for processing.
- 2
No notice yet
If the 7-week or 9-to-11-week period has not ended, wait. If it has, call. Have your mailing address, the date you sent the package, and the documents you included.
- 3
They need something else, or they reject it
The IRS will write if it cannot process the application. Fix what the letter asks for. Don't start over with a new number if you already have an ITIN and only lost the CP565. Call and ask them to look it up.
Still waiting on the notice?
Ask members how many weeks their CP565 took, and whether they applied in peak season or from abroad.
What it costs
Getting certified copies from the agency that issued your passport can cost money. That fee is the agency's, not the IRS's. The IRS also will not issue an ITIN only so you can open a bank account.
Why a package sits longer
- Sign Form W-7 and check the reason box
- Attach the return to a new application unless you qualify for an exception in the instructions
- Send originals or certified copies, not notarized copies, and don't send expired ID
- Give the IRS the full 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks, before you call
- Answer a request for more information instead of filing a duplicate
- Renew first if the ITIN is expired and the return claims credits that need a current number
