How do I find my ITIN if I lost it?
Short answer
A lost ITIN is still yours, so don't apply for a new one. Look on the IRS CP565 notice that assigned it or on a copy of a past tax return, where it sits in the SSN box. If you can't find either, call the IRS at 800-829-1040, or 267-941-1000 from abroad.

Where your ITIN is written
An ITIN is 9 digits, starts with 9 and looks like an SSN. These are the places it shows up.
| Where to look | Why it's there |
|---|---|
| The CP565 notice | The IRS mails notice CP565 when it assigns your ITIN |
| A past federal tax return | You enter the ITIN in the space for the SSN on Form 1040 or 1040-NR |
| Your acceptance agent | If a Certifying Acceptance Agent filed your Form W-7, the agent gets your number directly from the IRS |
If you still can't find it
- 1
Call the IRS
USAGov says to contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 to look up your ITIN. The IRS lists 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. From abroad, call 267-941-1000; it isn't toll-free. Deaf or hard of hearing callers can use 800-829-4059.
- 2
Don't send a new Form W-7
USAGov is clear: if your ITIN is lost, don't apply for a new number. Find the one you already have.
- 3
Renewing without the number? Say so on the form
If your ITIN expired and you need to renew it but can't find it, the Form W-7 instructions say to check No/Don't know on line 6e.
