What do ITIN numbers start with?

Short answer

Every ITIN starts with the number 9. An ITIN has 9 digits and is formatted like a Social Security number, NNN-NN-NNNN. On a valid ITIN, the fourth and fifth digits fall in set ranges, 50–65, 70–88, 90–92 or 94–99. Yours is printed on the IRS CP565 notice that assigned it.

How to read an ITIN

The IRS describes an ITIN as a 9-digit number that begins with 9 and is formatted like an SSN. The IRS acceptance agent guide, Publication 4757, adds the ranges for the middle digits.

Matching the pattern doesn't mean a number is active or belongs to you.
PartWhat it shows
First digitAlways 9
Fourth and fifth digits50–65, 70–88, 90–92 or 94–99
Layout9 digits in three groups, NNN-NN-NNNN, same as an SSN

So a number like 9NN-72-NNNN fits the ITIN pattern. One with 93 in the middle doesn't.

What an ITIN is for

An ITIN exists so people who can't get an SSN can file and pay federal taxes. The IRS is clear about its limits. An ITIN doesn't:

  • Give you Social Security benefits or the earned income credit
  • Give or change immigration status
  • Authorize you to work in the US
  • Serve as ID outside the federal tax system. The IRS says it's not proof of identity for a driver's license

It expires on December 31 of the third year in a row it isn't used on a federal tax return. You can't have an ITIN and an SSN at the same time.
