Can I apply for an ITIN online?

Short answer

Applying for an ITIN online isn't an option. The IRS lists only two ways to send Form W-7, by mail or in person, at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, a VITA site with ITIN services or an acceptance agent. The tax return that goes with a first application can't be e-filed either. It travels on paper, attached to the W-7.

Your options

You can download Form W-7 from irs.gov, but you can't submit it there. The IRS gives these choices.

At an IRS center, a VITA site or a Certifying Acceptance Agent, your passport doesn't have to go in the mail.

Taxpayer Assistance Center appointments are made at 844-545-5640, and the IRS warns that getting one can take several weeks.

Applying by mail

  1. 1

    Fill in Form W-7

One form per person. Families file a separate W-7 for each applicant.

  2. 2

Attach it to your tax return

Put the W-7 on the front of your Form 1040 or 1040-NR and leave the SSN box blank. The IRS writes in the ITIN and then processes the return.

  3. 3

Add your documents and mail the package

Send your passport, or two other documents, as originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them. Notarized copies aren't accepted. Mail it to Internal Revenue Service, Austin Service Center, ITIN Operation, P.O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342.

After you apply

Allow 7 weeks for an answer, or 9 to 11 weeks from January 15 to April 30 or if you applied from abroad. If you're approved, the IRS mails a CP565 notice with your number. You can e-file returns starting the year after the ITIN is assigned.
