ITIN expiration checker

An ITIN that isn't used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years expires on December 31 of the third year.

Reviewed by Alex Thomas · Updated Oct 28, 2026

Your ITIN looks active. Unused years started in 2025; it would expire on Dec 31, 2027 if you don't use it on a return before then.

ITINs with middle digits 70–88, 90–92, or 94–99 were rolled through earlier IRS expiration waves and were all expired by the end of 2020. Renew those the same way: Form W-7.

Questions

When does an ITIN expire?
If you don't use it on a federal return for three consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 of the third year of non-use.
Does filing an extension count as using my ITIN?
The IRS looks at whether the ITIN appears on a federal income tax return. An extension alone is not the same as filing that return.
How do I renew an expired ITIN?
File Form W-7 with the documents the IRS asks for, usually with the return that needs the ITIN. Start before you need to file so processing time doesn't block you.
