Which banks accept an ITIN?
Short answer
Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Capital One, PNC and Huntington all list an ITIN as a tax ID you can use to open a checking account. Federal rules let any US bank accept an ITIN instead of an SSN, but each bank sets its own policy, and some only take an ITIN in a branch.

Banks that say they take an ITIN
These are the banks' own account pages. Each one names the ITIN, or says it doesn't need an SSN.
| Bank | How you open it with an ITIN | What else it asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo Everyday Checking | Online or in a branch | Online, you must be 18 or older and have a physical US address and your own mobile number. In a branch, two IDs: passports and consular cards from Colombia, Guatemala or Mexico count as a primary ID |
| Bank of America account for non-US citizens | In a financial center, by appointment | Two unexpired IDs, such as a foreign passport and a driver's license. Bank of America says it doesn't require an SSN |
| Capital One 360 Checking | Online, with your SSN or ITIN as the tax ID | Your date of birth, address, employment, income and citizenship details |
| PNC checking | Online or in a branch. Without an SSN, you may need to go to a branch | A US government photo ID such as a driver's license or a passport, your date of birth and your home address |
| Huntington checking | Online, with your SSN or ITIN | A government photo ID, your current address and money for the first deposit |
| BMO checking | Not stated. The online form asks for an SSN and US citizenship | Non-citizens can apply by phone or in a branch |
Why a bank can say no
The Customer Identification Program rule asks banks for a taxpayer ID number, and an ITIN is one. It sets the minimum, not a right to an account. A bank can still ask for more or turn you down, and online forms are often stricter than branches. See whether you need an SSN for the full rule.
Before you apply
- 1
Have your ITIN at hand
You need the number, not a card. If you lost it, see how to find your ITIN.
- 2
Gather your documents
Most banks want a photo ID, your address and an opening deposit. Make your list with the bank account document checklist.
- 3
Call the branch first
If a bank's website only mentions an SSN, ask the branch if they open accounts with an ITIN or with a passport. Branch rules can differ from the online form.
