How long does it take to open a bank account?
Short answer
Opening a bank account online takes about 5 to 10 minutes at banks like BMO and Huntington. A branch visit at BMO takes about 30 minutes. A mailed debit card can take a few business days. Identity checks, missing documents or a branch-only process for non-residents can slow it down.

Online vs. in a branch
No regulator sets a standard time. These are the timings two banks publish for their own checking accounts.
| Step | Online | In a branch |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Under 5 minutes at BMO, 5 to 10 at Huntington | About 30 minutes at BMO |
| Identity check | BMO may ask for a photo of your ID and a selfie | You show your IDs in person |
| Ready to use | Huntington gives you the account number and online access right away once approved | Right away at BMO |
| Debit card | By mail within a few business days at BMO | On the spot at BMO |
If you need a card the same day, a branch is the faster route. Online is faster if you only need the account number for a direct deposit.
What slows it down
- The bank can't confirm who you are. The federal identification rule makes every bank decide what to do when it can't verify you: hold off, let you use the account with limits, or not open it.
- A missing document. Wells Fargo may ask for a separate proof of address on top of your ID. Bring a utility bill or lease so you don't have to come back.
- No SSN or US address. Online forms often require both, which sends you to a branch. Wells Fargo recommends an appointment for branch openings.
- Waiting to use every feature. BMO only allows mobile check deposit once the account is more than 5 calendar days old.
